The Fight Wreckord

fight-thumb3

On Saturday, April 18th, two Wrecking Ball Fighters entered the cage,  one for the first time, representing themselves and their fight camp proudly. Greg Gunthorp and Kent Rexford both won their fights by displaying full MMA onslaughts and neutralizing the opposing teams with grace and showmanship.

Kent effortlessly defeated his fighter with a TKO in one-minute and 42 seconds of Round 1. His domination in the cage woke the audience and the fury of his ground and pound caused the referee to stop the beat-down. His opponent was unable to protect himself from the powerful blows that Kent delivered from full mount. This fight was a true textbook display of quality MMA fighting.

Once Kent awoke the crowd, Greg Gunthorp had them standing on their feet screaming.  Greg experienced a full out THROWDOWN during his first MMA fight. His opponent came out swinging, delivering powerful blows and setting the very aggressive pace for three brutal rounds. Greg, collecting himself, returned fire with equal stopping power, delivered numerous shots and slams, flooring his opponent and ultimately winning his match by a rear naked choke in the 3 round.  It was the fight of the night, and one I will remember for the rest of my life.

Both sets of opponents needed to be carried away by coaches and medical personal. Greg and Kent literally Wrecked Them All.

Scott and I are honored to train and prepare these fighters for the cage and we thank them for the opportunity.

Congratulations Greg!

Congratulations Greg!

Congratulations Kent!

Congratulations Kent!

___________________________________________________________________

A  MMA fighter’s first big show bares seemingly impossible challenges… challenges that 95% of the population will never have to, nor want to face. For a fighter, the mind engages survival mode the second the contender knows a match has been made. What ever uncertainties or mental doubt a fighter may harbor towards themselves surges to the surface, and any self doubting scraps that may remain are ravaged by nerves. It’s the nerves that ultimately seal a fighter’s doom.

We call this, “The fight before the fight.”

When Scott and I inform a fighter that we found them their first MMA match, the feud begins instantly. The training becomes painfully intense, the sparring more frequent and bloody, the body begins breaking down with every passing minute. The threshold of pain and tolerance become heightened, and the threat of serious injury is vigilantly lurking around each and every corner… waiting for a single miscalculation.

It is an experience that a miniscule sub-culture of people would proudly claim as their sport. But it is more than a sport. In fear of sounding “Cliche”, MMA is a lifestyle. It is our vital sleep patterns we rely on to heal our bodies, it is the hours upon hours spent training, and it is the 1700 calorie diets we undergo just to make weight. These are the variables that guide fighters through their journey. And every month, with every new fight, the fear, the pain and the sleepless nights return, stronger than ever.

With that in mind, Wrecking Ball would like to sincerely thank and recognize all our fighters, whom put their heart and soul behind every round. You are leaders in this ever growing sport and we commend you for your courage.
